ORIGIN: German, from Latin and German parts

DEFINITION: a colorless crystalline feebly basic tricyclic compound occurring in crude anthracene fractions from coal tar and important as the parent compound of dyes and pharmaceuticals

SENTENCE: Acridine dyes are usually yellow, orange, red, or brown.
