Word Nerd: Dispatches from the Games, Grammar, and Geek Underground is a book written by John D. Williams Jr., the former executive director of the National SCRABBLE® Association. The book is full of stories and insights about SCRABBLE® from John’s perspective, including some pretty interesting ones, like the time a lot of words considered offensive were removed from the official SCRABBLE® player’s dictionary!
The book is interesting and eye-opening, and I liked it a lot, in particular because I am a big fan of words. Why? Well, I competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee (!) this year… and tied for 50th. (And all because of that dang Preliminaries Test.) However, I DID study a lot of words, and I will continue studying them until NEXT year’s Bee.
To sum it all up: This is the perfect book for SCRABBLE® fans and word nerds anywhere.
